Communion With God
And they heard the voice of LORD JEHOVAH God walking in Paradise to the declining of the day, and they hid themselves, Adam and his wife, from before LORD JEHOVAH God within the trees that were in Paradise. 9And LORD JEHOVAH God called to Adam, and he said to him, “Where are you, Adam”? 10And he said, “I heard your voice in Paradise, and I saw that I was naked, and I hid myself.” 11And LORD JEHOVAH said to him, “Who showed you that you are naked? Behold, have you eaten from the tree of which I ordered you, that you shall not eat from it?” 12And Adam said, “The woman whom you have given with me, she gave to me from the tree, and I ate.” 13And LORD JEHOVAH God said to the woman, “What is this that you have done?” And the woman said, “The Serpent deceived me, and I ate.”
Genesis 3:8-13 Peshitta Translation from Aramaic
According to Scripture, before the Fall, God regularly communicated with Adam and Eve. He created humanity for fellowship and communion with Himself. This divine relationship was central to creation—God desired a personal connection with His creation. When sin entered the world through the Fall, that perfect communion was broken. Yet, God’s love was so great that He sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to die for our sins. Christ’s death and resurrection paid the price for sin and made it possible for us to be restored to that original relationship with God.
The Communion With God painting represents life before the Fall, when all creation was in perfect harmony with its Creator. In this imagery, the heavenly hosts are present, and the serpent—symbolizing the coming temptation—is seen approaching from the earth on the left. Adam and Eve stand upon the Rock of Salvation, Jesus, symbolizing the holy propitiation for our sins. Flowing waters represent the refreshment and presence of the Holy Spirit, who gives life and renewal. This painting is full of symbolism embedded within the clouds, water and earth.
As believers today, we understand that the Holy Spirit dwells within us, empowering us to have a personal and ongoing relationship with God. Through the Spirit, we experience a taste of that same divine communion that existed in Eden—restored through the grace and salvation of Jesus Christ.
